I thought he was going to say ‘bada bing’ was the sound of bullets ricocheting off of the base insulator…

Wouldn't the Sopranos interior shots have been at  Silvercup or Chelsea?

All,

I really don't know the history of the WINS site, but I guess I was confused by the 1962 report saying that it was located near Weehauken, NJ.  But certainly Weehauken is less than 6 miles from the Empire State Building, so I guess I should have taken the reported location with a grain of salt...

Per Dan's request, allow me to elaborate about the Bada Bing reference.  The locals near the WABC tower had apparently started using the base insulator for target practice.  To avoid further damage or potential catastrophe, WABC erected a brick wall around the base to block a clear shot to the insulator and adjusted the tuning a bit to compensate for it.

A local go-go club in Lodi, NJ named Satin Dolls is located on Route 17, near the WABC property.  (It was formerly a delicatessen known as "The Hearth" where we used to get our lunchtime sandwiches, but I digress.)

Satin Dolls was used as the exterior location for the fictional Sopranos Bada Bing club. Scenes inside the club were shot on a sound stage in California, as far as I know, although I remember one scene being shot in the Party Box store, adjacent to Satin Doll/Bada Bing.

I would not be too difficult to imagine Tony Soprano and the boys amusing themselves with a little target practice...

Ken and all,

I have no idea of the time frame of it's installation, but from our days in The ABC Field Shop I recall a concrete-block room inside the transmitter building in which there was a small emergency studio complete with a small console and turntables. I seem to recall Larry Mussman mentioning that it was there in that emergency studio where Dan Ingram shifted the on-air operation to during the '65 blackout. Most of you have probably heard this, but in case you haven't, there's a recording of WABC during the brownout that preceded the blackout. You can hear the tape decks slowing down and exhibiting severe "wow." Its interesting.

In the waning days of The Field Shop, I remember Larry cleaning the equipment out of there and throwing it in the dumpster. I don't know if new, state-of-the-art equipment replaced it or not. Perhaps Kevin Plumb can chime in here.

Ken, I don't know if everyone is aware of your reference to The Bada Bing Club. Perhaps you should explain. :)

Tom,

Very intersting reading!  I'm sure others have more complete (and perhaps more accurate) info, but let me put in my two cents.  Has anyone contacted Larry Mussman recently?

I think that WABC is the only station still occupying the same site as when this report was written.  I recall that roof of the transmitter building was was reinforced later with a significant amount of concrete, but I have no idea when that was done.  More recently, the base of the tower also had a wall built around it to keep the locals from using the base insulator for target practice.  It was next door to the Bada Bing club, after all. ;)

I also recall being told that the shorter tower mentioned in the WABC description was used as for the Conelrad system, but no reference to it is made in the WABC report.

The standby generator was probably sized only for Conelrad operation, and that was WAY before FEMA got into the act.  Also, with the diverse power delivery feeds to the transmitter site, I don't think the power "went out" all that much in those days.  Except, of course for the blackouts in 1965 and 2003.  (I don't think the 1977 blackout affected the Lodi transmitter, but I'd have to ask my fellow NABET engineers on picket duty that night at the site if that was so.)

Thankfully, the sort of attacks contemplated in this report never materialized.  We got other types instead...

A friend just forwarded me this link - it's quite interesting - and what's really interesting is that most NYC AM stations at that time did not have the generator capacity to run 50KW.
