Remote Meeting attendance

On that subject Philip brings up.

When Chriss Scherer and I were still on the board, even before we were national officers we were extremely interested in finding a way to make remote attendance work for chapter meetings.  In fact the first national SBE webcasts in 2007 and 2008 were attempts to address the challenge.  There was interest at one time in creating a "chapter of the web" (like the ham radio Chapter of the Air) but one of the reasons that didn't gain much traction is because it would damage individual chapter participation and programs.  We wanted instead to find ways to help the chapters get online themselves.  Unfortunately we've seen only one-offs.  Even our attempts at putting the national meeting online are still extremely rough.  A productive, engaging online chapter meeting has never been a regular success for any chapter (as far as I know at least).

If you've ever done video conferencing or web-based meetings you know there are some very unique challenges to make it a useful experience.  You can't just set up a webcam in a room.  Web and teleconference meetings like those run by the NAB and NRSC seem to get closer to a functional model but there are challenges and expense to make that work...and it still not exactly the right format for chapter meetings.

So there are a lot of hurdles but if a workable model could be figured out it could have a huge positive impact on chapters members with scheduling conflicts like Philip.  I bet chapter 15 attendance would spike because the challenges of converging on a location from all of the 5 boroughs (not to mention the whole tri-state area) could be much less of an issue.  The impact, however to chapters that cover much larger geographic areas could seriously benefit from it.

If there are people with interest in working this problem out into a repeatable model that could be replicated to other chapters (and even branded and sponsored!), I am certain SBE national and other chapters would appreciate it.

I will not be able to attend this meeting as I am working on a live TV show at that time, as are many of the engineers at our company.  Will this be streamed, whether it be through Go To Meeting or Webex or something else. This is an important topic and it would be valuable if more of the NY engineers could see and hear it even if they could not participate.

Of course texting a question in is available too these days.
