Fiber 101 - Everything you need to know about fiber for broadcasting
This presentation discusses the fundamentals of fiber as used in broadcasting. We'll discuss applications and why fiber is essential for both remote production and inside today's facilities. We'll look at fiber technology - types, cables, connectors, active and passive components and calculating optical budgets. Finally we'll look at how fiber fits into a facility from ENG cameras to routers and distribution, and effective strategies to maximize your fiber investment.
The Evolution of the SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver) in telecommunication and their migration into the broadcast market.
This presentation will cover the various types of modules, the pros and cons of these components, and the introduction of new pluggable technologies in the broadcast environment.
Sarkis Abrahamian is Vice President of Business Development for Embrionix Technologies. Sarkis has been in the broadcast industry for over 10 years, primarily focused on fiber optics, SFP development, and compression. Embrionix has introduced advancements in SFP functionality and design, while retaining the small pluggable form factor. Sarkis holds degrees in Electrical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology from the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and St. Clair College in Windsor Ontario, respectively.
Peter Wharton first joined Miranda Technologies in 2001 and in 2013 was appointed as Product Manager for Telecast Fiber Solutions. Prior roles have included Strategic Account Manager for File-Based Workflows and Systems and Solutions; Sales Director for Monitoring and Control Products, Broadcast and IPTV; Director of Master Control and Channel Branding for the Americas, and Director of Regional Sales. In all of of these roles Peter has been actively involved in product development and market strategies. While at Miranda he has played an instrumental role in the centralization initiatives of several station groups as well as the design and implementation of numerous specialty channel and TV network playout facilities.
Prior to working at Miranda, Peter was with PanAmSat where he was involved with the development and launch of their NET-36 satellite-based IPTV content delivery network. Before this he worked for twenty years at the Fox and ABC television networks in engineering and management capacities, including overseeing White House technical operations and special events coverage, designing facilities and coordinating coverage of worldwide news events.
Peter has been a past manager of the Washington DC SMPTE section and past president of the Washington Executive Broadcast Engineers. He is currently an Eastern Regional Governor for SMPTE and has given several papers at previous PBS TechCons and SMPTE events. He has also been the coordinator for the two-day annual SMPTE technology conference in the Washington DC area for the past 16 years.
